Neil Parish MP, chair of the Environment Food and Rural Affairs Committee, said: "Whilst we appreciate the initial positive steps, we are concerned that the Government is shying away from the bold action needed to tackle this crisis". If everyone makes a small change it will add up to a very big difference for local air quality.

TfGM is also encouraging employers to consider flexible start and end times for their staff so they can take advantage of the free travel offer.

People across the region are being encouraged to make a long-term pledge to change their travel habits for the second Greater Manchester Clean Air Day. They also gathered in the traffic-free road to spell out a huge "We love clean air" message.

Copeland, Barrow, Allerdale and Carlisle all came in the top 10 when it came to low levels of air pollution coupled with affordable housing.

Pledges to take action include: leaving the vehicle at home just one day a week; car-sharing when possible; working from home regularly; walking and cycling more; and encouraging friends to do the same.

"The level of support available to local authorities is now inadequate".

The city leaders will be playing a part in an ambitious national plan for clean air that prioritises action to reduce road transport emissions, provides new powers to tackle other sources of pollution and creates a framework to support partnerships between local, regional and national Government and its agencies including Highways England and business. Our research has already revealed the devastating impact of outdoor air pollution on heart health, but we now need to understand the potential effects of indoor air pollution.

Children are exposed to 30 per cent more air pollution than adults when walking to school because they are shorter, and nearer to exhaust fumes, a new report has found.

Referring to the scientific claims that Yoga can improve oxygen intake, Shekhar said such an activity will not lead to desired results if the air was polluted.

"We wouldn't make our children drink dirty water, so why are we allowing them to breathe dirty air?"

Meanwhile environmental lawyers at ClientEarth - which has won three court cases against the government over its failure to deal with illegal levels of air pollution - said the Government has missed the point of the report and made soft commitments. "It might take me a couple of minutes longer but if it reduces Ariyan's exposure to air pollution, then it's worth it".
