The two have battled over Apple's encryption on its devices, which makes it hard for law enforcement agencies to break into and get data from phones they procure.

The FBI and other law enforcement agencies have bypassed Apple by paying companies that specialize in extracting data from locked iPhones, such as Grayshift and Cellebrite.

Apple said that after it learned of the techniques, it reviewed the iPhone operating system code and improved security.

While the above method introduced in iOS 11.4 does indeed work as intended, with iOS 12, Apple plans to significantly ramp-up the potency of the feature by reducing the unlock window from seven days to just one hour.

Rumors of Apple's supposed interest in switching from proprietary connectors to USB have popped up multiple times over the years, despite the company's use of 30-pin Dock Connectors and 9-pin Lightning connectors to tightly control the accessory markets for its products. It prevents other devices-personal computers, for example-from accessing data on the iPhone via its Lightning port an hour after a phone is last unlocked. "We have the greatest respect for law enforcement, and we don't design our security improvements to frustrate their efforts to do their jobs".

With the changes, police or hackers will typically have an hour or less to get a phone to a cracking machine.

This also could spur sales of cracking devices, as law enforcement looks to get more forensic machines closer to where seizures occur. Vice versa the MacBook charger will likely be too powerful for the iPhone to handle. Every time Apple has instituted new security procedures, new workarounds have been found nearly as fast.

Apple said it was working a fix to mitigate the possibility of accessing data from GrayKey or similar tools.
