RIP Threadripper: Intel teases 28C/56T CPU at 5GHz

  • Intel 28-core CPU

Something to look forward to: Intel has been showing off some of its new products at Computex, including the Core i7-8086K anniversary CPU that some retailers began listing last week, and a monstrous 28-core single-socket processor.

Otherwise the processor is outfitted with six-cores and 12-threads, plus a base clockspeed of 4.0GHz. This processor is being released to to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Intel's 8086 processor and Intel's first consumer desktop processor that runs out-of-the-box at speeds up to 5Ghz. Intel isn't revealing all of the turbo frequencies, but we've seen speculation online that the chip will have a 4.6GHz all-core turbo frequency. So you'll be able to spend a few thousand on a new 28-core CPU this year. Intel is actually planning to auction 8,086 of these CPUs on a sweepstakes site (you can sign up here starting on Thursday June 7, at 5 PM EDT). They may be reserved for OEMs and boutique system builders instead of being made more generally available. Intel hasn't said how numerous Core i7-8086K chips it has manufactured but notes that supplies are limited. It's based on the company's Coffee Lake architecture and is a 6-core/12-thread part with a 4GHz base clock, 5GHz boost clock, and 12MB of L3 cache.

Normally, Intel puts its work on power-efficiency into its processors, with each generation of mobile Core i chip getting more efficient than its predecessor. At the top end, that's huge.

"Through continued innovation with the industry, we expect to deliver an additional four to eight hours of local video playback - that means battery life could be up to 28 hours5 on some devices", Gregory Bryant, Intel's general manager of its client computing group said.
