  • Are Android Tablets Dead? Google Removes Tablet Section From Android Website

Lenovo and ASUS also have relatively recent Android tablets available, though these are not powered by flagship SoCs.

The three tablets now on sale on the official Android website are the Nvidia Shield Tablet K1, the Sony Xperia Z4, and the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 8.0. Some say that Android tablets will not be missed, as Chromebooks represent a better alternative.

The navigation bar on android.com is now bereft of a Tablet category and as pointed out by Android Police, you can now view information about Android running on Phones, Wear, TV, Auto, and even check out Enterprise options - but not tablets.

While the confusion was still in the air, it got confirmed by Hiroshi Lockheimer - Google's SVP for Platforms & Ecosystems - that the company never intended such happening and the removal of the section was, in fact, was a technical bug while updating the website. For those who have been following Google's fortunes in the Tablets market, this hardly comes as a shocking revelation. It is possible that instead of Android powering Google's tablets, it may soon be Chrome OS. And Dexter M: "Nice, but can someone fix the bug where Google has forgotten to make Nexus / Pixel tablets?" While the Apple iPad continues to survive - not thrive exactly - Android tablets have been badly hit over the last couple of years.

There seems little room for Android and Chrome OS to coexist on the same form factor, especially with native support for Android apps being baked directly into Chrome OS.

We already knew that Google had big plans for its Progressive Web Apps (PWAs). For one, there isn't any Android P dev tablet. In December 2017, the company released an official statement on "retiring" its Pixel C tablet. Apple has been dominating sales figures with over 40 million of the 160 million global tablet shipments being iPads.

Google has been hard at work making Android apps work on Chrome OS.
