With its Hawaiian theme, the "Re-Lei For A Cure" event attracted visitors from throughout the country.

"We welcomed over 50 cancer survivors, 200 participants and members of the American Cancer Society National Relay Leadership Team, who came as far as California to join us", in addition to local visitors, Martin said.

Emily Tier was one such visitor.

The festivities will start with team fundraising, bouncy castles and slides, yoga, karate, and tattoos done by Wheels of Faith, a silent auction, and the opening of the Relay Store all at 4 p.m. She was also anxious how she was going to tell her family about the diagnosis. I saw what my patients were dealing with and going through.

"We are hoping to raise $40,000 this weekend", said Kaitlin Irgang, a representative with the American Cancer Society. "Relay has both a sad side and fun side, but people always come back year after year".

"But what really matters are the names on these Luminaria bags". Hundreds showed their support in a universal fight against cancer, especially for one Wausau mother who's fighting the disease right now. "It doesn't matter if they were diagnosed 10 days ago or 10 years ago, we honour and celebrate their strength and courage with every step they take", says Farrow.

There were also zany events like Mr. Relay, where guys were made to look "fabulous" and competed to see who could collect the most money for the American Cancer Society.

After joining a support group called LifeSpring and talking with other survivors, Kathy Lowe said she learned to embrace her feelings around the disease. She battles for herself as well. There kept being other options, another clinical trial.

The survivor and caregiver lap is set for 6:45 p.m. with the emotional luminary ceremony at 8 p.m. during which luminaries in memory of those who have lost the battle to cancer and those still fighting will be beautifully lit around the makeshift track inside the stadium.

"I'm a survivor since 1975".

McAloon said final fundraising totals will not be official until August 31, the closing date for the year. "Not only the survivor or the person going through cancer, but also the caregivers", said Eric Witham, Relay For Life logistics event chair.

Several speakers shared their experiences battling cancer, and coming out a survivor.

"But Relay for Life is important because of the money it raises to critical cancer research", she said.

She noted contributions to the 2018 Greater Niagara Relay are still being accepted.
