Prominent Australians recognised in Queen's Birthday honours

The Scottish writer, 52, who has been a teacher in state schools for almost 30 years, is made an MBE for services to literature in the Queen's Birthday Honours.

Malcolm Richardson, a magistrate in North Avon and then South Gloucestershire for more than 25 years, and former national chairman of the Magistrates" Association, has been recognised in the honours list for "services to the administration of justice'.

"To receive such an MBE from Her Majesty is just a tremendous honour".

These honours, which are handed out twice a year, once at New Year and again to mark the Queen's birthday, recognize ordinary people and celebrities, who have made achievements in public life or committed themselves to serving and helping Britain.

Joking that he thought the letter informing him of the knighthood had been from the taxman, he added of the achievement: "We only set out to do the best we possibly could, even through all the other stuff - the charity or Hillsborough, it was to help people because somebody helped us". Speaking of her recent award, Liz Cuddy said: "It was a huge surprise to receive an OBE".

"I like to think this award honours that, and the importance of literature and creativity in the classroom".

Professor Chambers has received the award of Officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia (AO).

In the business sphere Judy Naake, who made millions selling St Tropez self-tanning products, initially from the back of her auto, receives an MBE for services to entrepreneurship, the community and philanthropy.
