President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday to end his administration's policy of separating undocumented immigrant families and instead detain parents with their children.

"We're going to have strong, very strong borders, but we're going to keep the families together", said Trump who said he didn't like the "sight" or "feeling" of children separated from their parents.

The administration separated 1,995 children from 1,940 adults from April 19 to May 31 after zero tolerance was announced, according to the Department of Homeland Security. The order aims to keep families together while they are in custody, expedite their cases, and ask the Department of Defense to help house families.

In a shift from previous policy, families will now be held together during the process of prosecution and deportation at the border.

Obama also noted that most Americans are descendants of immigrants who created a culture of acceptance, adding that people should make their voices heard with actions, not just words, and at the ballot box.

But Mark Krikorian, executive director of the D.C. -based Center for Immigration Studies supported the president. Obama's top domestic policy adviser, Cecilia Muñoz, told the New York Times in a recent interview that the former administration had considered a family-separation policy but ultimately opted against it.

The administration has consistently said that it was forced to separate families due to a court case known as "the Flores Settlement". A House Republican leadership aide says Majority Whip Steve Scalise provided the White House with a list of undecided members whom Trump "personally needs to work" on the "Goodlatte 2.0" bill, the so-called "compromise" proposal.

It was not immediately clear what Trump, who had previously blamed the family separations on Democrats, would sign.

Meanwhile, the document Trump signed won't reunite the more than 2,300 children now separated from their parents, whose plight Trump admitted privately this week was deeply damaging to him politically.

Mrs. Trump issued a rare statement on Sunday saying that she "hates to see children separated from their families and hopes both sides of the aisle can finally come together to achieve successful immigration reform".

What exactly the order will say is still continued to be worked out, with ongoing conversations between the White House, the Justice Department and Homeland Security, the source explained.

Although Trump's crackdown is aimed at deterring irregular migration to the USA, the North American country has witnessed has witnessed a surge since October, with many migrants fleeing violence and extreme poverty in Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.

After every living first lady voiced opposition to separating children and families at the border, a former president is now speaking up.

"We can either release all illegal immigrant families and minors who show up at the border from Central America, or we can arrest the adults for the federal crime of illegal entry", he said.

'When you prosecute the parents for coming in illegally, which should happen, you have to take the children away'.

"Right now we're focused on getting this bill passed", he said.

The order is titled "Affording Congress an Opportunity to Address Family Separation". "Obviously, this is not the way we do things in Canada".

House leaders have been considering two competing bills.
