Optus to simulcast World Cup matches with SBS amid technical issues

"But if you are looking for the World Cup and you've signed up to this Optus sport package, the way they've designed their network to deliver that television to mobiles phones, tablets and screens around Australia has failed".

SBS has a deal that only allows it to broadcast selected games from the group and knockout stages, along with Socceroos games, both semi-finals and the final.

However, Optus' broadcast was so dire that Socceroo fans have labelled its digital platform as the country's most hated technology following this weekend's events.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has even become embroiled in the dispute after phoning Lew today, who reportedly assured him the problems would be swiftly resolved.

After continuing problems with its World Cup streaming service, Optus has given SBS more games to show on FTA as a make-good while Optus attempts to deliverwhat it promised to all customers.

A TIO spokeswoman urged consumers to talk to Optus as early as possible and said if there were problems with "carriage services (phone or internet services)" then the TIO would be able to help them but not for all complaints about online services.

Fans called on telcos to leave sports to traditional broadcasters, with some saying streaming events like the World Cup online disregarded older generations and those living in rural Australia.

Customers took to social media to complain about the streaming issues, upset that they were missing match content.

The situation was made worse by the lack of support offered to frustrated customers.

SBS already had broadcasting rights to some matches of the tournament, but will now be showing all World Cup matches for the next 48 hours, for free!

An Optus spokesperson apologised to customers affected, but insisted "the majority of customers are having a good broadcast experience".

As an added remedy, Optus is offering complimentary Fetch Mini set top boxes at retail outlets.

Yesterday, Federal Labor MP Stephen Jones criticised the Turnbull government for its 2014 Budget cuts to the media organisation - which may have sparked the decision to split the broadcast right with Optus.

"Under the Australian Consumer Law, services must be fit for the goal and deliver on what was promised".

"We are seeking further information from Optus on what steps it is taking to comply with the Australian Consumer Law".

"We know some customers didn't have a great experience watching the 2018 FIFA World Cup™ during the opening nights and for that we are sorry", the telco said on its website.
