New Tesla software to offer 'full' autonomy, Musk says

  • New Tesla Roadster could have rocket engines option – Musk

Revealing that the "Automated Mode" in the next-generation Roadster will come in addition to the Autopilot system, Musk said that the feature is expected to "massively enhance human driving ability".

Musk also mulled possibility of the rocket thrusters helping the vehicle getting some serious air.

Tesla produced the first version of the Roadster from 2008 to 2012. It's unlikely that version 9 will make the cars completely autonomous-at least not yet-but it could allow for better self-driving capabilities in certain situations. But this time it was Elon Musk's own Roadster, which was launched into space atop a Falcon Heavy rocket.

Those potential benefits would be in addition to the previously announced specifications for the electric vehicle, which includes a 200kWh battery pack that will enable the auto to achieve a 0-60 miles per hour time of 1.9 seconds.

The electric vehicle company unveiled the new all-electric Roadster alongside its Semi truck last November. Also with the Model Y SUV in the pipeline, the new Roadster has been slated for 2020.

He ended by saying "New Tesla Roadster will exceed all gas sports cars in every way". "The point of all this is just to give a hardcore smackdown to gasoline cars".

Tesla will get the new software update after two years as Version 8 was announced back in 2016, which brought a revamped user interface, a set of new features and significant improvements to Autopilot. The rocket engines will obviously help the vehicle accelerate faster and reach higher top speed.

Spent air from the thrusters would be refilled immediately using the Roadster's batteries to power air pumps, which in lesser electric vehicles may be a reduced range concern.

There's no denying the Tesla Roadster's incredible performance, but the timing of the auto is just as interesting as the technology inside it. Production delays mean Tesla has been on the back foot and depending on your confidence in the company, the Tesla Roadster can be seen as a fightback or a decoy.
