Net Neutrality Repeal Takes Effect Monday

  • Net Neutrality Ends Tomorrow, FCC On Track To Remove Rules As Scheduled

"Plain and simple, thanks to the FCC's rollback of Net Neutrality, Internet providers have the legal green light, the technical ability, and business incentive to discriminate and manipulate what we see, read, and learn online".

"Net neutrality ensures equal access to online content regardless of who is providing or requesting information", Florian Schaub, an assistant professor at the University of MI who specializes in internet privacy, wrote in a paper recently published in the academic journal Media and Communication.

Even though net neutrality is dead, don't expect to see immediate changes, said Evan Greer, deputy director of Fight for the Future, a digital rights advocacy group.

Across the country, state officials have moved to keep net neutrality rules in place on their turf. In his view, removing the rule will open the floodgates to corporate investment, ultimately providing faster and more widespread internet access.

The Senate passed a measure to preserve the net neutrality rules last month.

But both of these approaches are expected to lead to court challenges by the FCC, whose new policy on net neutrality contains explicit language that tries to preempt states from doing exactly what the legislation and executive orders are meant to do.

Ajit Pai, whom President Trump named to be his new FCC chairman, and who spearheaded the repeal of the net-neutrality rules, killed that inquiry soon after assuming the chairmanship.

Q. What's net neutrality, again?

Over the past six months, tech companies, small businesses, consumers and lawmakers have tried to prevent Monday's repeal from happening, but to no avail.

Also, the Senate voted to save net neutrality, though that effort isn't likely to become law.

The Federal Communications Commission voted to overturn the Obama-era regulations in December. Those rules required online service providers to treat all internet traffic the same without slowing or blocking content from competing providers. Deregulation could potentially change what you can access on the internet. "The clock is ticking-if the CRA resolution doesn't get a vote this year, it dies when the new Congress comes into session". But what's more likely to occur are subtle changes to your Internet experience that you may or may not notice. In 2015, the FCC stripped the FTC - the nation's premier consumer protection agency - of its authority over internet service providers.

Washington and OR now have their own net neutrality laws, and a bill is pending in California's legislature.
