Microsoft acquires software development platform GitHub for $7.5B, exodus begins

  • A Microsoft cloud... sorta

Microsoft actually once offered its own code-hosting repository known as CodePlex, however Microsoft announced back in 2017 that it was closing this service down and was partnering with GitHub instead.

News of the deal sent shares of Microsoft higher by 0.4% to $101.24 on Monday afternoon. Since its inception it has become a mainstay of the open source world, with countless projects-including Microsoft projects such as the Visual Studio Code text editor and the .NET runtime-using GitHub repositories as a place to publish their code to the world and coordinate collaborative development. In taking on GitHub, which has yet to turn a profit, Microsoft is hoping to re-build trust with the developer community and expand the adoption of the Github platform with larger, legacy enterprises that already use Microsoft's software and services.

The open-source model was once anathema to Microsoft, the leading commercial software company.

Following months of talks and rumors, Microsoft has finally officially revealed that it has agreed to acquire GitHub. It also benefits from a powerful network effect-as more developers have joined it, GitHub has become even more attractive to other coders.

GitHub reportedly preferred selling to going public, and chose Microsoft after meeting Nadella and being impressed by him.

In the cryptocurrency world, GitHub plays a major role as it is the platform where the cryptocurrencies launch their TestNets; a mock version of their MainNets before the launch.

Friedman says plainly that this isn't in the cards: GitHub has won over 24 million developers because of its openness to all tools and technology, and it wouldn't do to hamstring it now. In fact, just previous year, Microsoft shut down CodePlex, which is like GitHub although it launched back in 2006.

Immediately upon announcing the deal, Microsoft sought to assure users that GitHub "will operate independently to provide an open platform for all developers in all industries", addressing concerns about the possibility of Microsoft using the acquisition to give itself an unfair advantage or change how GitHub operates. It has supported Linux and used open-source development in its technology.

"Most importantly, we recognize the responsibility we take on with this agreement", Nadella said.

GitHub, founded in 2008, hosts open-source software.

GitHub CEO and Co-Founder Chris Wanstrath has also published "A bright future for GitHub" on the GitHub Blog, and also states that Microsoft and GitHub share a common vision.
