Microsoft acquires a whole bunch of game studios

11 June, 2018, 01:26 | Author: Rafael Roberts
  • Microsoft's Xbox E3 conference live stream set for 1 pm PDT; Gears of War, Halo 6 and maybe some fighting games en route?

At Microsoft's E3 press conference, Xbox boss Phil Spencer devoted to an entire segment to reeling off first-party studios in their ownership - with some nice surprises.

Microsoft has also acquired "Playground Games" of Forza Horizon fame, State of Decay 2's "Undead Labs", "Compulsion Games" of We Happy Few, and "Ninja Theory" behind Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice.

That's quite a lot of IPs that Microsoft just.owns now, and it's weird to think that they now have their hands in so many franchises, all in an instant.

If that wasn't enough, Microsoft has also opened up a new studio in Santa Monica.

Set in Britain, the game features dynamic seasons in a shared open world, and seasons apparently "change everything". Forza Horizon 4's Britain is apparently a shared open world, so other racers you meet will be real players elsewhere in the world.

There's been no fighting game specific cues as of yet and it's wholly possible that we won't see any directly FGC-related content in today's conference, but the well is deep and the possibilities are endless.

According to The Initiative Studio Head Darrell Gallagher, the new studio has "been given the freedom to explore, try new things and operate like an independent studio, with the backing from one of the biggest companies in the world to do something bold and different". The message was clear: Xbox is going to be about the games again.
