"Canada has been restrained throughout in dealing with a temperamental president and I think all the way through we've avoided rising to provocation and tried to deal with the facts", said McKenna.

"We strive to reduce tariff barriers, non-tariff barriers and subsidies", the statement said, which came despite Washington appearing intent on taking more punitive steps on trade.

In the two tweets that ended US support for the joint G-7 statement, Trump accused Trudeau of having made "false statements" during a news conference.

Kudlow, the conservative economist who directs the National Economic Council, was upset with Trudeau's comments at a press conference after the contentious Group of 7 summit in Quebec.

United States President Donald Trump's chief economic adviser Larry Kudlow on Sunday accused Canadian President Justin Trudeau of backstabbing them.

"There's a special place in hell for any foreign leader that engages in bad faith diplomacy with President Donald J. Trump and then tries to stab him in the back on the way out the door", Navarro said in an interview with Fox News on Sunday.

It came in response to what he claimed were "false statements" by Canadian premier Justin Trudeau.

"They pay only a fraction of the cost - and laugh", he wrote, adding that the European Union needed to pay "much more" to help fund the worldwide military alliance, which comprises 28 members including the UK, US, Germany, Canada and Turkey.

Europe will implement counter-measures against US tariffs on steel and aluminum just like Canada, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said, voicing regret about Trump's decision to withdraw support for the communique.

"Well, he holds a press conference and he says the U.S.is insulting". He said the Canadian leader must not have realized that Trump had televisions on Air Force One, allowing him to monitor Trudeau's news conference at the end of the G-7 summit.

Liberal MP and former dairy farmer Wayne Easter said there was a real sense of panic building in his P.E.I. riding over the implications of Trump's pronouncements following his departure from the G7 gathering. Photo taken June 8, 2018.

Shortly after the summit ended on Saturday, Mr Trump used Twitter to announce that he was ordering officials not to endorse the G7 communique agreed hours earlier by the US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan. Now there is a question mark over that.

Trump is right to assail China for unfair trade, but doing the same with our closest allies is a mistake.

Speaking to the House of Commons, May said the other G-7 nations "expressed deep disappointment at the unjustified decision of the United States to apply tariffs to steel and aluminum imports" and urged dialogue to avoid "tit-for-tat escalation".

"It was betrayal", the top White House official said. Nearly 70 percent of the steel used in the United States already is produced here, and our nation can never be self-sufficient in aluminum production because the bauxite used to make the metal is not mined here. "He did a great disservice to the whole G7".

"We're talking to all countries", Trump said, denouncing what he said were huge existing tariffs on USA exports around the world. "We joined the communique in good faith", Kudlow said.

"The G20 helpfully has more countries that have a stake in the economy of the world, including the G7", he told Reuters.
