  • UPDATE: First lady visits migrant children at Texas detention center

Many in the media freaked out Thursday over a jacket first lady Melania Trump wore when boarding the plane to visit immigrant children in a Texas detention center.

" 'I REALLY DON'T CARE, DO U?' written on the back of Melania's jacket, refers to the Fake News Media".

One thing that stood out during her visit was her jacket, which had the words "I Really Don't Care, Do You?" inscribed on it.

The trip was meant to lend support to those children who remain separated from their parents, said Stephanie Grisham, the first lady's spokeswoman.

Mrs. Trump had removed the jacket with the somewhat baffling message by the time she arrived at the center holding the children in Texas.

Melania Trump began her unexpected border visit at Upbring New Hope Children's Shelter with an offer of help.

The first lady's demonstration of concern for the people affected by United States immigration enforcement draws a contrast - whether deliberate or not - with her husband, who often speaks derisively of those who enter the country illegally and regularly portrays them as threats to public safety.

Third-graders welcomed the first lady with a large paper American flag they'd signed taped to a wall.

The first lady's visit comes one day after President Donald Trump signed an executive order to cease his own administration's separation practice that has caused wide-ranging criticism and consternation.

The first lady said she wanted to lend her support to the children, and asked staff to reunite them with their families as quickly as possible.

First lady Melania Trump on Thursday traveled to Texas to speak to children and officials at a shelter for migrant children.

Asked whether the first lady's jacket bore the words "I don't care", Grisham responded, "I don't know".

She changed into sneakers before landing in Texas, but people still questioned her decision.

The move is aimed at stopping the separation of children from their families amid a new policy where anyone caught crossing the border is charged criminally. The facility here opened in 2014 and there are now 58 children aged 12-17. The White House hasn't confirmed.

Mrs. Trump, whose focus is on children, may have helped encourage her husband to act.

Grisham released a statement last weekend saying the first lady "hates" to see children separated from their families and "believes we need to be a country that follows all laws, but also a country that governs with heart".

"As with a many topics she will continue to give her husband her opinions", Grisham said.

Her plans were kept secret until she landed, with reporters on board the plane not even told which town they'd be visiting.
