  • Asylum seekers sue Trump administration over ‘zero tolerance’ policy

Stephanie Grisham-spokeswoman for Melania Trump-responded to a report from The Daily Mail that suggested the first lady wore a jacket that read, "I REALLY DON'T CARE, DO U?" before visiting undocumented immigrant children who were being held in Texas. The high in the District on Friday, the first day of summer, was 86 degrees.

When asked what message the jacket meant to send, spokesperson Stephanie Grisham said: "It's a jacket".

When Melania Trump boarded a plane to Texas on Thursday her jacket gave off quite the message.

However, he made a U-turn yesterday under mounting pressure and when signing the order, Trump said he did it because he "didn't like the sight or the feeling of families being separated".

Mrs Trump, whose focus is on children, may have helped encourage her husband to act.

The jacket was discarded before her visit of the facility, during which she was dressed in white jeans, a khaki shirt, and white Stan Smith sneakers. They were transferred to a residential center near Dilley, Texas, where she was told that she and her family had a credible asylum claim, but that her sons would be taken to a shelter in NY while she remained in Texas.

The president had come under massive pressure to make the change, but was reportedly also lobbied to make the change by his wife, who had criticized the separations.

CNN analyst Chris Cilizza questioned why staff didn't suggest that the first lady not wear the jacket.

Meanwhile, three of the 12 immigrant children at a Catholic Charities shelter in Fort Worth, near Dallas, were expected to be reunited with their family on Thursday.

Top House Democrat Nancy Pelosi said her caucus was opposed to both bills, and it was unclear if there was sufficient Republican support for the compromise measure.
