San Francisco Supervisor London Breed emerged victorious Wednesday to become the city's first African-American woman mayor after narrowly defeating a rival who was seeking to become the first openly gay man in the position.
After more than a week of suspense, San Francisco now knows its mayor: London Breed.
Born in San Francisco, Breed was raised by her grandmother in the city's public housing and attended public schools.
"It was the support she was getting from trusted leaders in the city across the spectrum of race, ethnicity and ideology that ended up making her pretty popular as a mayoral candidate", said Jason McDaniel, associate professor of political science at San Francisco State University. "So many people care about making sure that we're coming together to address these most challenging issues", Breed said. "And I am prepared to make sure that I do everything that I can to work together, to bring the Board of Supervisors together, to bring everyone together for the objective of solving our most challenging problems". Mark Leno by almost 2,200 votes out of almost 250,000 ballots cast.
"I called Supervisor London Breed this morning to congratulate her on her victory and to wish her every success both personally and professionally in her new job as mayor of San Francisco", Leno said. "She was very gracious". "We haven't seen a day where it hasn't gone in her direction", he said.
"I'm told that this may be one of the, if not the closest electoral decision for a mayor in San Francisco", he said. The old notion of a "Tale Of Two Cities" is to clique at this point.
"I am so hopeful about the future of our city", she said.
She was formerly president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, the city government's legislative body. She, Breed and Kim all stood a chance to be the city's second female mayor, following in the footsteps of Sen.
Leno could have been the first openly gay mayor of San Francisco, a city that's always been on the forefront of LGBTQ rights.
Acting MayorMark Farrell also offered his congratulations. "I'm proud to live in the largest city in America with a woman as mayor", she wrote. She continued to grow that margin to 1,861 votes as of Tuesday afternoon, leading to Leno's concession on Wednesday.
Breed's narrow lead has been increasing since Saturday and Leno conceded the race Wednesday, saying the math did not favor his campaign.
On Monday, the elections department included about 9,000 votes that were tallied since Sunday.
The elections office continues to tally roughly 7,000 ballots, but there is no way Leno can make up the difference.
The two had been taking turns in the lead as ballots were tabulated under San Francisco's ranked-choice election system, in which voters choose their top three picks. The candidate with the fewest first-choice votes is eliminated, and votes for that person are redistributed to the voter's second choice, and so on until a victor emerges with the majority. But if not, a complicated process ensues in which the last-place finisher is eliminated and any voters who ranked that person first will now have their vote count toward their second choice.
The victor was selected through the city's uncommon ranked-choice voting system, which is thought to save money on expensive runoff elections and elect the most broadly supported candidate.
