Lewis Hamilton: Improving Ferrari will falter - Canadian Grand Prix 2018

  • Red Bull Racing driver Daniel Ricciardo of Australia takes a turn at the Senna corner ahead of Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton of Britain during the Formula One Canadian Grand Prix auto race in Montreal Sunday

Valtteri Bottas finished second but never seriously threatened the lead, while Lewis Hamilton finished down in fifth, dropping him to a point behind Vettel in the standings having had a 14-point lead coming to Canada.

This marked the first Montreal race that a Ferrari driver won the pole position since Michael Schumacher took the first grid back in 2001.

The Canadian Grand Prix top three in qualifying: Valteri Bottas (2nd), Sebastian Vettel (1st) and Max Verstappen (3rd).

Over the expected finish line, after 70 laps, the gap between the pair was just 0.1s in the Finn's favour, however, the race was officially ended two laps early due to celebrity model Winnie Harlow waving the chequered flag prematurely. We definitely need it and we are going to get for the next race so that's good.

Yet, amid a season in which the balance of power at the front between the top three teams has ebbed and flowed on nearly a race-to-race basis, Hamilton remains convinced Mercedes have it in their power to emerge on top again. "Every single lap I was waiting for the power to just drop away and disappear, but it kept going".

The balance of the Ferrari wasn't right, Max Verstappen set the pace for Red Bull and Vettel brushed the wall at the end of practice one then sat out the first 34 minutes of the second session while waiting for the auto to be repaired.

"I'm just so happy that I finished as from the start I was down on power and my engine was saying that it was over temperature and I couldn't get them down", Hamilton said.

"The team has been extremely strong in the past at keeping reliability on a high level so that is not a part that worries me, it is more we have seen today a Ferrari that is the stronger vehicle - strong in qualifying, strong in race and at no time we had a chance to fight for the win. But I love the idea, that's why I said yes even though I was pushing like fudge to get them in".

He is, however, confident that he can overturn that, whether it be through Mercedes getting it right or Ferrari faltering.

When asked by Motorsport.com how the trial run went, Grosjean said: "Very painful!"

"I think we've got potential in this vehicle and when you guys are writing your stories, I think previous year there was "oh, Mercedes have the best car" and all those different things, but ultimately I think we did the better job", he added.

Kimi Raikkonen was sixth ahead of the two Renault cars with Nico Hulkenberg leading home Carlos Sainz Jr.

New Zealander Brendon Hartley will start in 12th for Toro Rosso.

A steward's investigation found neither driver at fault.

This year marks the 55th edition of the Canadian Grand Prix at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Parc Jean-Drapeau. After 42 laps, sadly, Fernando Alonso's 300th Grand Prix weekend came to an end when, chasing 10th, he was called in to pit and retire. The Spaniard was forced out with engine trouble after 42 laps.
