  • No sex with foreigners during FIFA World Cup warning to Russian women

Perhaps she was anxious that the women would face a future of single parenthood, but then the lawmaker said that it would be fine if they slept with foreigners who were the same race.

In a quote translated by the Moscow Times, Pletnyova said: "It is one thing if the parents are of the same race; quite another if they are of different races". Even when Russian women marry foreigners the relationships often end badly, said Tamara Pletnyova, head of parliament's committee for families, women and children.

The committee chair said the Soviet Union experienced a similar phenomenon during the 1980 Olympic Games hosted in Moscow.

She warns that even if these women plan on marrying their foreign baby daddy, their child could end up stuck in another country with no means of getting back to Russian Federation.

"It's the children who suffer... and have suffered since the Soviet era". It's lucky if they're the same race (as the mother) but if they're of another race, it's worse, ' the Siberian-born politician said.

Asked if the World Cup could boost Russia's birth rate - a key goal for President Vladimir Putin - Pletneva replied: "We should be giving birth to our own children". "I am no nationalist but nevertheless". They are being dumped and this is it.

"Even if they marry, they move her overseas, then she does not know how [to return] from there", Pletnyova, who is known for her conservative remarks, told the Govorit Moskva (Moscow Speaks) radio station on Wednesday.

"Then they come to me at the committee and cry that the child was taken away, removed, and so forth. I would like people to get married based on love in our country, regardless of which ethnicity, [to] Russian citizens who would build a good family, live in harmony, have children, and raise them", Pletnyova added.

However, her comments drew both criticism and ridicule. Women are often stranded overseas or in Russian Federation but unable to get their children back, she said.

Pletneva previously criticised the #MeToo campaign against sexual harassment, tentatively spreading in Russian Federation. Why should we copy everything? "If a woman doesn't want it, no one is going to harass her", she told Gazeta.ru news site in February.

Meanwhile, companies involved in this year's World Cup - including Federation Internationale de Football Association and Russian Railways - are having employees take classes to learn how to smile and make tourists feel more welcome.
