Late Night TV Reacts To Historic Trump-Kim Summit

  • Unprecedented meeting seen as a path to world peace

Rodman was crying from behind his dark sunglasses while wearing a "Make America Great Again" hat and explaining to CNN's Chris Cuomo the trials he's faced to try to create peace between the US and North Korea, including receiveing death threats.

Trump also is wrong in saying "nothing happened" in return. But Lu Chao, an expert on North Korea at the Liaoning Academy of Social Sciences in northeast China's Shenyang city, says the guarantees are probably "a repeat of previous US statements that it does not seek to overthrow the current regime in North Korea".

President Moon Jae-in is expected to be briefed personally by the U.S. secretary of state, who landed at Osan Air Base.

Trump, who returned to Washington early on Wednesday, hailed the meeting with Kim, the first between a sitting U.S. president and a North Korean leader, as a success that had removed the North Korean threat.

This time, Mr. Trump employed many words to acknowledge that he got nothing back from Mr. Kim but words.

Despite the confusion and disappointment among some, the summit managed to, for a time at least, reset a relationship that has always been characterized by bloodshed and threats.

Trump's embrace of Kim in pursuit of denuclearization has left North Korean defectors and human rights advocates like Jung Gwang-il feeling abandoned. Bush took a tougher stance toward North Korea, and the 1994 nuclear deal collapsed because of suspicions that the North was running a secret uranium program.

He had been imprisoned in North Korea from January 2016 after being sentenced to 15 years of hard labour for trying to steal an item bearing a propaganda slogan from his hotel, North Korea state media said.

Talks are to be led on the US side by Pompeo and, according to the agreement, a "relevant, high-level" North Korean official. Trump and Kim referred back to the so-called Panmunjom Declaration, which contained a weak commitment to denuclearization but no specifics on how to achieve it.

The country was as surprised as anyone by President Donald Trump's sudden announcement in Singapore that the USA would be "stopping the war games" - the joint military exercises it regularly carries out with South Korea.

One day after the meeting between Kim and Trump in Singapore, North Korea's state-run media were filled with images of its beaming leader standing as an equal on the global stage with the president of the most powerful country in the world - a reminder of just how much of a propaganda coup the North saw in Tuesday's unprecedented summit.

North Korea has been an isolated nation since it first divided from South Korea after the end of World War II in 1945. It's true that Kim responded with heated attacks, and the rhetoric escalated on both sides, but the American president shouldn't be elevating a despot like Kim in the first place and further instigating confrontation. "At the same time, there needs to be a peace mechanism for the peninsula, to resolve North Korea's reasonable security concerns".

"We had a historic meeting and made a decision to leave the past behind and we are about to sign the historic document", Kim said through a translator. The next scheduled major exercise, involving tens of thousands of troops, normally is held in August.

"We're signing a very important document, a pretty comprehensive document", Trump told the waiting reporters. -South Korean military exercises, framing it as Trump agreeing to a request from Kim.

The Pentagon said on Tuesday that it was consulting with the White House and others, but was silent on whether the August exercise would proceed.

Washington has described the drills as defensive in nature, but Pyongyang says they are a rehearsal for invasion and has long called for them to end.

The country's defence minister, Itsunori Onodera, said drills and the U.S. military presence in South Korea were "vital to security in East Asia".

In Singapore, the North Korean leader again committed to "complete denuclearization", and the two countries promised to "join their efforts to build a lasting and stable peace regime" on the peninsula.
