Johnny Depp was "as low" as he'd ever been when he faced financial troubles amid his public divorce from ex-wife Amber Heard. Rodrick's profile, covering three days spent with Depp in his London mansion, addresses everything from his financial woes (which are dire) to the legal web surrounding his estate (it's profoundly confusing) to his own drinking and drug use (some of which takes place during the interview).
The 55-year-old is now suing The Management Group - which is run by his former longtime business manager, Joel Mandel, and his brother Robert - for negligence, breach of fiduciary duty and fraud.
Despite the fact that his and Heard's divorce was finalized in August of 2016, after the domestic abuse allegations that he has denied, his troubles with the law did not come to an end.
Speaking candidly about that period, he told Rolling Stone magazine: "I was as low as I believe I could have gotten".
But the actor is claiming that while he has a sound engineer, he's not feeding him his lines but merely playing certain sounds that help him get more immersed into the scene and act in a more credible way. Depp also complained that the Mandels paid his sister $7 million and his assistant $750,000 without telling him, and let his family in Kentucky spend exorbitant amounts of money.
Rolling Stone writes, "According to [a lawsuit], Depp kept a sound engineer on the payroll so he could feed him lines through an earpiece while filming". "It creates a truth". It had to be behind the eyes.
As Depp drinks wine and seems to constantly orate, Rodrick works in a number of details about the actor's alleged $2 million-a-month lifestyle and the disappearance of untold millions more through everything from gross over-spending to alleged fraud that has Depp now involved in a lawsuit with his sister. "And my feeling is, that if there's no truth behind the eyes, doesn't matter what the words are", he said.
He went on tour with the Hollywood Vampires, his band with Alice Cooper and Joe Perry, and made a decision to write a memoir on an old typewriter.
"I poured myself a vodka in the morning and started writing until the tears filled my eyes and I couldn't see the page anymore", he said emotionally, wiping his eyes. "Because it was far more", he said. The truth is most important to me.
