Jaguar Land Rover to move Discovery production to Slovakia

  • The Land Rover Discovery is set to be moved from production near Birmingham by the beginning of 2019

JLR, owned by the Indian company Tata, had already signalled it would move a large amount of the production on the Discovery, which sold about 45,000 units a year ago, the lowest volume of the five models built in Solihull.

Britain's biggest automaker JLR has previously said its next generation Discovery will be built at its Slovakia plant and on Monday said there could be some job cuts in Britain.

The company warned that there may be some job losses in the United Kingdom as a result.

Britain's biggest auto maker says production will move from Solihull to Slovakia in eastern Europe early next year.

The British report added that although Land Rover had yet to indicate whether the upcoming second-generation Evoque would be offered in coupé guise, this latest development suggested it "almost certainly" wouldn't be.

After its makeover, the plant will produce the new Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models.

Fundamentally, the technology upgrade in Solihull will account for a third of the plant. The biggest plant in the company, it now employs 9,000 people.

Last month, the company said fourth-quarter pretax profit halved to £364m on revenues of £7.6bn as demand for diesel vehicles slumped.

The group saw pre-tax profit slump to £364 million in the three months to March 31, down from £676 million in the same period past year.

The company has also blamed Brexit for hitting demand in Europe's second-largest autos market, where demand fell 6 percent past year, a source told Reuters in April.

In addition the next Range Rover Evoque will be built at a site in Halewood.

The existing plant in Solihull, which now manufactures the Land Rover Discovery, is being retooled by Indian-owned Jaguar Land Rover to accommodate previous statements made by the company that all new models will be electrified by 2020.

JLR - which is owned by the Indian group Tata Motors - said that it remained "committed to the UK".

As well as new manufacturing plants in China and South America, JLR has struck a deal with carmaker Magna Steyr to build the both its Jaguar E-Pace and the all-electric I-Pace models in Austria.

David Bailey, the professor of industrial strategy at Aston University, said it has raised hopes that the JLR's first electric vehicle - the I-Pace - will be built in Britain.
