Intel's First Dedicated Graphics Cards to Launch in 2020

  • Intel will be releasing its first discrete GPU in 2020

Whether this is an evolution of Intel's Gen GPU or an entirely new architecture remains to be seen, as there are good arguments for both sides.

Koduri led the Radeon Technologies Group that collaborated with Intel to help it build its new 8th Generation Core H chip with discrete graphics for slimmer laptops that can handle gaming demands.

At the moment there are only two GPU players, and these are the best graphics cards around. The company's existing efforts have been focused on offering graphics through Intel's CPU chips, but the performance has been limited. His expertise is critical in helping Intel to compete with the like of not just AMD, but GPU juggernaut NVIDIA.

By 2020 AMD will have a 7nm Navi GPU already on the shelves for a year, and potentially a more powerful refresh of the initial mainstream design ready to roll too. We might even have a GTX 1180 from Nvidia by then too.

Intel has announced that it will be releasing its first discrete graphics card in 2020, with the new GPU aimed at data center and gaming PCs.

"Raja is one of the most experienced, innovative and respected graphics and system architecture visionaries in the industry and the latest example of top technical talent to join Intel", said Dr. Murthy Renduchintala, Intel's chief engineering officer and group president of the Client and Internet of Things Businesses and System Architecture.

In a very short tweet posted to their Twitter feed yesterday, Intel revealed/confirmed the launch date for their first discrete GPU developed under the company's new dGPU initiative. And that's going to require a lot of work on Intel's side and it spending a lot of time working with game developers.

That nearly means Intel can't really take a particularly radical approach to its new GPU because they'll need to be as familiar as possible to encourage developers to code for them.

For now, we'll have to wait and see what CES 2019 brings us.
