We'll get to see for ourselves just how great it is when The Incredibles 2 is released here on Friday 13 July.
"The film shows the drawing power of the superhero genre, whether in the live action or animated realm", box office analyst Paul Dergarbedian says.
As of Sunday estimates, the film looks to have made $180 million, Box Office Mojo reports.
"Incredibles 2" also landed the eighth-biggest domestic opening of all time, and surpassed 2017's "Beauty and the Beast"($174.6 million) for the best debut for a PG-rated film. Bird's sequel beat the inflation-adjusted animation record-holder as well - that would be Shrek the Third, whose 2007 opening stands at an adjusted gross of $151 million.
The move premiered Friday (June 15) and has grossed over $180 million in the USA and Canada, a new record for an animated feature opening. Playing in 503 locations, the long-delayed film which boasts a 0 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, took in $1.7 million. Brad Bird returned to write and direct the sequel. The film has highly positive reviews.
"Incredibles 2" comes 14 years after "The Incredibles", which at the time boasted one of the biggest animated openings ever, and picks up right where the first film left off with the superhero family.
Disney has been notified of the situation and asked all theaters that are showing "Incredibles 2" to notify patrons of the scene in question.
So far the film brought in $231.5 million around the world.
In second place was female heist flick Ocean's 8, which followed up on a big opening by earning $19.6 million in its second week, according to Exhibitor Relations.
Lewis expanded on this concern in a blog post titled The Real Villain In Incredibles 2 - Strobe Lights (NO SPOILERS).
