  • Police officer lauded for saving toddler on Illinois highway (video)

The department posted dash cam video of the incident to Facebook and noted Mannino was presented Thursday with a live-saving service award.

Police in IL released video showing the moment an officer stopped to save a young boy he saw running on the side of a busy road.

Cars continue to drive by in the left lane as the scene unfolds.

The video shows the 1-year-old boy running down the roadway as traffic passes just a few feet from him.

"I have twin boys", he said.

After about 30 strides, Mannino catches the child, according to the dashcam footage. Mannino then alerts dispatch that he has him and would begin searching for his parents.

No one was hurt, which the police department attributes to Mannino's "observation while on patrol and quick reaction, placing his squad auto and himself between the child and traffic".

The department's post says the child "escaped his mother's watchful eye" and wandered along Route 59 as traffic whizzed by.

The boy's mother arrived moments after Mannino saved him, WGN reports.
