Germany’s Mesut Ozil doubtful for World Cup

  • Mesut Ozil training with his Germany teammates

Germany's team director Oliver Bierhoff added: "It's nothing dramatic, we just don't want to take any risks and he was able to sprint in training".

Having scored the 1-0 in Germany's 2-1 loss to Austria last Friday, Ozil was substituted in the 76th minute with a bruised knee.

Ozil had missed the closing games of Arsenal's Premier League campaign due to a back injury suffered during the Europa League semi-final second leg against Atletico Madrid on May 3.

The 29-year-old who lifted the 2014 World Cup as part of Germany's squad has been capped 90 times and scored 23 goals for the national team.

A disappointed Joachim Low outlines how Germany's error-ridden display against Austria affects their World Cup preparations.

Bayern Munich centre-back Jerome Boateng could play his first game since suffering a groin injury in April, but Bierhoff said that a final decision has not been taken.

With Ozil out, Paris St-Germain's Julian Draxler is likely to fill the attacking midfield role with Chelsea's Antonio Ruediger stepping in for Boateng if needed.

Colongne defender Jonas Hector is confident the players can produce the required display as part of final preparations before leaving their Italian training base at Eppan and heading to Russian Federation, where Germany will be the top nation in FIFA's latest rankings.

It is believed that for Germany's opening game against Mexico, Manchester City's Ilkay Gundogan or Schalke's Leon Goretzka will play instead of Ozil.

"I can't explain that". Sane was at a bigger club, with bigger expectations, with better players.

The reigning champions will also meet South Korea and Sweden in Group F.
