  • Woman strangles bobcat to death in front yard in Georgia

The incident happened June 7 around 6:15 pm on Liberty Church Road, when Hart County deputies responded to reports of a woman calling for help.

"They go for your jugular. when they can get the vein you're dead in a couple of minutes", she said, noting she was careful not to yell until the cat was subdued, because she didn't want her 5-year-old granddaughter to come outside.

"I grabbed it by the shoulders and pushed it back away from me ... and I took it down", she says.

Phillips says she grew up in the country, where her father-in-law was once a trapper of bobcats. Phillips said the bobcat attacked after she snapped a picture of it. An attack which ultimately saw DeDe Mealor Phillips strangle the wanton animal with her bare hands.

"I thought, 'not today, '" she told the newspaper.

"As he starts towards me, I threw my phone and he went mid-air and just about knocked me down", she said.

The battle left Phillips with broken fingers on both hands and bruises and cuts on her body.

As the large feline clawed her, the adrenaline kicked in and she made a decision to strangle it, she says. But her plans changed when she spied a bobcat.

"It never budged, so I knew it was completely dead", she said.

Of note the unprovoked attack follows a rabid skunk and rabid fox being found in the same area. The cat took two steps and was on top of me. In this photo, a rescued bobcat waits to be fed at The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg, Colorado, Oct. 20, 2011.

Phillips' cousin set up a Fundly.com account to raise money for her medical expenses; she's already collected $24,200 as of Saturday afternoon.
