France's Macron sees way forward on trade, Trump says working together

  • Talks with Trump are like sausages, says French President Macron: Report

Not to be outdone, Trump responded on Twitter saying that both Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau "are charging the US massive tariffs and create non-monetary barriers".

Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel talks with US President Donald Trump at a family photo session with the leaders of the G7 summit in Charlevoix, Quebec, Canada.

Canada and Mexico, the other members of NAFTA, have been frustrated by what they see as unacceptable U.S. demands in slow-moving talks to modernize the deal.

Trump also lashed out at long-time allies over their criticism of his trade policies.

"We have a very really good relationship, very special", said Trump who recently hosted Macron for a state visit - the first since the American president came to power.

Trump was departing the Canadian summit several hours early, heading to Singapore for his summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un on what he called a "mission of peace".

"Canadians are polite and reasonable but we will also not be pushed around", Trudeau said. At a press conference following the summit, Trudeau repeated his earlier description of U.S. trade tariffs as "insulting" and vowed retaliatory measures would come in July. Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Canada are the other members of the G7.

Other world leaders shared different angles of the photograph.

Guy Verhofstaft, the European Union parliament's representative in Brexit negotiations and former prime minister of Belgium, shared a photo of Merkel staring down President Trump during a meeting at the G7 summit.

But no consensus document will hide the damage inflicted by the United States leader's aggressive imposition of tariffs on what had been some of Washington's closest allies.

In the United States version, we see Mr Trump face on, apparently calm, leaning back confidently with a sceptical, nearly sarcastic air, his arms crossed in a rebuff to the other leaders, bent towards him pleadingly.

By the time Trump did arrive in Canada, met by a cordon of red-jacketed Mounties, he was well behind schedule, making the meeting impossible.

Canada in particular has been outraged by Trump's tariffs, taking umbrage at the argument that they were motivated by national security concerns.

"It is evident that the American president and the rest of the group continue to disagree on trade, climate change and the Iran nuclear deal", Tusk admitted.

Like Canada, the European Union is preparing counter-measures against US tariffs on steel and aluminium imports, in line with World Trade Organisation rules, Merkel said.

He suggested just before touching down in Quebec that Russian Federation should be allowed to rejoin the summit after five years in exile - a break in the united front allies had hoped to put forward against Moscow's destabilization efforts in the USA and Europe.

A German official said that if Trump declines to sign a communique, it won't be the end of the G-7, but it would be a worrisome signal.
