"We believe that trade is win-win, and we believe that our economic relationship with the United States is mutually beneficial and reciprocal", she said separately, adding: "We are aware, however, the U.S. - This current administration has a different paradigm".

Macron's office stressed that France and Europe maintained their support for the communique, saying there was no place for anger on the circuit of worldwide diplomacy.

"International cooperation can't depend on anger and small words".

"Let's be serious and worthy of our people".

The joint communique that was thrashed out over two days of negotiations vowed that members would reform multilateral oversight through the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and seek to cut tariffs. We stick to it.

Trudeau's office responded to Trump's tweet saying "We are focused on everything we accomplished here at the #G7 summit".

"It's actually not a real surprise".

Climate: An agreement to disagree. "To build that up again will take much longer", he told reporters in Berlin. Not just double-crossing President Trump, but other members of the G-7, " Kudlow said.

"We went through it".

"I have made it very clear to the President that it is not something that we relish doing, but it is absolutely something that we will do".

The G-7 is made up of Canada, France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan and Italy.

"Is that really how we want to deal with our second-biggest trading partner?"

Larry Kudlow, Trump's top economic adviser, took things further Sunday morning, saying on CNN's "State of the Union" that Trudeau's comments amounted to a "betrayal".

The top White House economic adviser accused Canada's prime minister on Sunday of betraying Trump with "polarising" statements on USA trade policy that risked undermining the American leader on the eve of a historic summit with North Korea. So, I ask you: "He gets up in the airplane and leaves, and then Trudeau starts blasting him at a domestic news conference?". "We make commitments and keep them", the presidency said, adding that "France and Europe maintain their support for this statement".

The comments from Trudeau prompted Trump to criticize the Canadian leader on Twitter and decline to endorse the G7 communique.

It comes after Trudeau explained his position at a news conference in which he outlined the difficulties in moving forward with the North American Free Trade Agreement.

"If they retaliate, they're making a mistake", Trump said. Tariffs are going to come way down because people can not continue to do that.

Trump claimed America had been obliged to levy the metals tariffs as it has been exploited as the world's "piggy bank" under existing arrangements, but his counterparts were equally determined to protect "rules-based" worldwide trade.
