  • Britain's Secretary of State for Education Minister for Women and Equalities Nicky Morgan

They also voted to disagree with Lords amendment 37, which was part of an attempt to remove the exit day from the Bill and allow the Commons to rethink its approach.

They reassured anti-Brexit MPs that the government would accept some of their core demands to give parliament a meaningful say on the terms of Britain's European Union divorce, including - potentially - a new deadline for a deal to be agreed with Brussels that could make it hard for the government.

The logic of that argument is that EU negotiator Michel Barnier would prefer the softest of Brexits - a model known as "Norway plus", in which Britain remains in the European Economic Area (EEA) and the customs union, accepting all single market rules, including freedom of movement, and the EU's trade policy without any representation in Brussels.

The House of Commons voted 324 to 298 to defeat an amendment to the EU (Withdrawal) Bill which would have removed her government's power to unilaterally walk away from talks with Brussels.

But his amendment rejecting the EEA and proposing "full access to the internal market of the EU" was a messy fudge that was too much for many Labour MPs to swallow.

She has previously spoken of the threats she faced for challenging the government, and revealed that one colleague would not be voting as they wished this week for fear of reprisals.

But it has secured victory on all the other votes so far on Tuesday, including a challenge to the government's plan to put March 29, 2019, or "Brexit Day".

His competing amendment could force ministers to hand over control of its Brexit strategy to parliament if there is no deal by mid-February.

Pro-European Conservative, Nicky Morgan, told the BBC that May understands that "parliament wants to have a real say, in all circumstances". She now relies on the support of a small Northern Irish party.

"The government can not demonstrate the flexibility necessary for a successful deal if its hands are tied midway through that process", he said.

The government averted defeat Tuesday by promising that Parliament would get more say over the U.K. -EU divorce deal. "And I can not bring myself to vote for it in the bastion of liberty, freedom and human rights that is our Parliament".

LONDON - Theresa May avoided defeats on key pillars of her Brexit policy after a majority of MPs voted with the United Kingdom government to defeat a number of amendments on Wednesday evening.

In response to the votes, Lib Dem leader Sir Vince Cable accused Labour of conspiring with the Conservatives to "wave through a hard Brexit".

Labour's divisions were laid bare when Jeremy Corbyn was hit by six frontbench resignations and 89 MPs defied him in a key Brexit vote.

He joined four other Labour MPs who quit the party's frontbench to back an amendment from the House of Lords that would keep the United Kingdom in the EEA.

Earlier, tensions over the bill's provisions on devolution boiled over when SNP MPs walked out of the Commons after their leader Ian Blackford was ejected.

He had sought to disrupt proceedings in protest at the government's failure to leave enough time to debate how the legislation would affect devolution.
