U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he has asked U.S. representatives not to endorse the joint communique put out by the Group of Seven leaders after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's "false statements" at a news conference.

But Trump had already said he would not hesitate to shut countries out of the U.S. market if they retaliate to his tariffs. Later, the document was made public.

Trump left the G7 summit in Canada early, then wrote on Twitter that Trudeau's remarks, including that his country would not be pushed around, "were very dishonest and weak".

Shortly afterward, the White House issued a separate photo showing a sitting Trump speaking as Merkel, Abe and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau listen.

"It would be with regret, but it would be with absolute certainty and firmness that we move forward with retaliatory measures on July 1 applying equivalent tariffs to the ones that the Americans have unjustly applied to us", Trudeau said.

Trump repeated the call on Saturday, saying "we're looking for peace in the world".

"We strive to reduce tariff barriers, non-tariff barriers and subsidies", they said in the statement.

But "at the same time we need to avoid tit-for-tat escalation" and maintain a constructive dialogue, she said.

Such a move could make it almost impossible to renegotiate the terms of the 1994 NAFTA pact between the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Trump left the summit early to head for his Singapore summit with Kim Jong Un.

The communiqué had been agreed by all countries participating in the G7 in spite of tensions over U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, the BBC reported, with Trudeau commenting that all countries had signed on to the statement prior to Trump's comments.

It is an annual summit bringing together Canada, the United States, the UK, France, Italy, Japan and Germany, which represent more than 60% of global net worth between them.

Trump said Friday he thinks the group will produce a joint statement.

"These issues are too fundamental for the World Trade Organization process to resolve", said.

The BBC parsed the picture by identifying all nine individuals in it, including British Prime Minister Theresa May, who is barely visible, and Larry Kudlow, head of Trump's National Economic Council as well as several Japanese officials and US national security adviser John Bolton.

What Trump is doing on trade should surprise no one.

Trudeau criticized Trump's recent decision to place tariffs on steel and aluminum from the European Union, Canada and Mexico, saying it was "insulting" that Trump cited US national security as his reason for doing so.

Trump cautioned other nations - those in the G-7 and around the world - that the size of the USA economy means other nations can't win a trade war.

"On NAFTA we either leave it the way it is as a three-some deal with Canada, the United States and Mexico and change it very substantially - we're talking about very big changes".

After the conclusion of the summit, Trump again said he would not allow other countries to impose barriers on the United States.
