Donald Trump Calls for Total Tariff Removals at G7 Summit

Europe will implement counter-measures against USA tariffs on steel and aluminium just like Canada, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Sunday, voicing regret about PresidentDonald Trump's abrupt decision to withdraw support for a G7 communique.
However, the text made no mention of previous pledges to phase out inefficient fossil fuel subsidies, and in a break from last year's G7 Summit in Italy where leaders made more of an effort to agree a form of words on climate action the U.S. may support, this year's text more clearly sets out the differences between the two camps.
Larry Kudlow, director of the National Economic Council, lashed out at Canadian Prime Minster Justin Trudeau as "amateurish" and "sophomoric" for a news conference he gave after Trump left the Group of Seven summit on Saturday.
Trump said: "Fair Trade is now to be called Fool Trade if it is not Reciprocal" and suggested that Canada was profiting from US trade, citing what he said was a Canadian press release.
Mr Trump's bombshell announcement that he was backing out of the G-7 communique torpedoed what appeared to be a fragile consensus on the trade dispute between Washington and its top allies.
"Canada has already raised cases at the WTO and at NAFTA, and we will retaliate", she said.
"In a matter of seconds, you can destroy trust with 280 Twitter characters", German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said when asked about Trump's U-turn, adding it would take much longer to rebuild lost trust.
"Here's the thing", he added.
"We're like the piggybank that everybody is robbing", Trump said while addressing a press conference Saturday.
The summit took place after the Trump administration said it would impose steel and aluminum tariffs on Mexico, Canada and the European Union after previously providing allies with brief exemptions.
"I have made it clear to [President Trump] that it is not something we relish doing, but it is something that we absolutely will do", Trudeau said.
When Mr Trump left Quebec it was thought that a compromise had been reached, despite the tension and determination of European leaders President Emmanuel Macron of France and Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany to push back on Mr Trump's assault on the world trade system. "It is a betrayal", he said.
At the G-7 summit, Trump's spokeswoman, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, said the USA was "close to a deal" on NAFTA.
British Prime Minister Theresa May also went out of her way to thank Trudeau "for his leadership and skillful chairing" of what she called "a hard summit with at times some very candid discussions".
"Diplomacy means bringing people together", Cardin told CNN.
He concluded: "Sorry, we can not let our friends, or enemies, take advantage of us on Trade anymore".
"He followed up by asking why the United States should "allow countries to continue to make "massive trade surpluses", asserting that it is "not fair to the people of America" and that the United States is suffering under a "$800 billion trade deficit".
Having castigated his host and neighbour and disrupted the alliance of democracies, Trump tweeted about being on his way to Singapore "where we have a chance to achieve a truly wonderful result for North Korea and the World".
