  • David Warner is set to join St Lucia Stars in Caribbean Premier League

The 31-year-old is still able to play other forms of the game, though, and will make his return for the Winnipeg Hawks in the Global T20 Canada tournament later this month. Steve Smith, the former Australia skipper, Warner and Cameron Bancroft were all banned from worldwide cricket for their roles in the incident when a piece of yellow sandpaper was used to alter the surface of the ball.

Former Australia vice captain and hard hitting batsman David Warner will add to the considerable firepower of the Saint Lucia Stars for the 2018 edition of the Caribbean Premier League.

The team has called up Warner to replace fellow Australian big-hitter D'Arcy Short.

The opener was given a nine-month suspension from worldwide and state cricket in March after admitting attempting to alter the condition of the ball during the Newlands Test against South Africa. "David is arguably one of the greatest batsman of the modern era and a winning player", the Stars' general manager Mohammad Khan said in a statement.

Australia batsman Cameron Bancroft, who was banned for nine months, will join Warner for a limited-overs tournament in Northern Territory in July.

However, Warner and Smith were also barred from participating in the Indian Premier League 2018 in an independent decision by the IPL's governing body.

The upcoming season of the T20 league kicks off on August 8 with Trinbago Knight Riders, the defending champions, taking on St Lucia Stars.
