Costa Rican media pessimistic after loss to Serbia

Costa Rica defender Johnny Acosta was dazed after being caught by an accidental elbow from Dusko Tosic, but both were able to continue before, with the first half approaching its final five minutes, Urena blasted over from the edge of the box.

Serbia's stout defense, led by Kolarov, who plays for Roma, and veteran Branislav Ivanovic, a former Chelsea player who was making his second World Cup appearance, proved a difference in the match. Fancy being thrown into the deep end and taking charge of your country's opening match of the 2018 FIFA World Cup?

Here's hoping things start opening up a bit as the group stage progresses.

Costa Rica will be without Ronald Matarrita for the entire competition after the defender picked up a serious hamstring injury during training.

If you held a gun to my head I think the match could go the way of Costa Rica, but it is going to be a tight match and one I think is going to go either way!

For Oscar Ramirez-coached Costa Rica, the aim in this World Cup is to improve on their best performance of a quarter-final which they achieved in 2014 and they have brought to Russian Federation the core group that did wonders in Brazil.

Serbia found it hard to break them down, but they rarely looked troubled at the back and barring a late half chance for substitute Joel Campbell, they coasted through the game.

Tadic, 29, came into the tournament after an inconsistent season, but one he finished strongly, providing three assists in his final seven games.

On the half hour mark Sergej Milinkovic-Savic had a great chance to find the back of the net when he got in behind the Costa Rica defence, but he shot straight at the keeper from ten-yards out.

The Costa Rican bench were not impressed with the Serbian's vigorous efforts on the sideline. However, it would be unwise to completely write off their opponents here, considering that boss Mladen Krstajic is a complete novice and given Costa Rica's performance in Brazil during the 2014 World Cup. In 2015, Serbia were proclaimed Under-20 world champions and Milinkovic-Savic was awarded the Bronze Ball. Milinkovic-Savic plays a fine ball over the top and Mitrovic is through on goal, one-on-one with Navas, but he can not squeeze his effort past the Real Madrid goalkeeper, who makes a vital stop to deny the forward.
