  • US Navy secrets were obtained in a Chinese cyber attack

The data stolen was of a highly sensitive nature despite being housed on the contractor's unclassified network, the Post said, citing the officials.

Chinese government hackers compromised the computers of a US Navy contractor and stole a large amount of highly sensitive data on undersea warfare.

Much of the stolen material was linked to a secret project called Sea Dragon and included signals and sensor data, and submarine radio room information relating to cryptographic systems, according to the newspaper. An investigation is ongoing.

The hack disclosure comes a week after U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis criticized Beijing's militarization of disputed islands in the South China Sea at a regional security conference.

Among the data seized was also information on the US Navy's plans to mount a supersonic anti-ship missile on a submarine, The Post reported.

But, it has not been disclosed what the Sea Dragon project is.

The Navy is leading the investigation and is aided by officials from the FBI.

Navy officials declined to speak publicly about the hack, which was first reported by The Washington Post.

According to the publication, the stolen information was related American developments in ultrasonic anti-ship missiles, which should appear on USA submarines after 2020.

The project, a special Pentagon office initiative, was first proposed six years ago with the idea of incorporating military technologies, like existing weapons systems, into newer uses.

A US Navy spokesman said companies had a duty to tell the government if they had been targeted in cyber attacks. According to the investigators, the operatives of the Chinese Ministry of State Security also obtained the Navy's submarine development unit library, which offers a glimpse into hundreds of mechanical and software systems used by the Navy.
