  • Donald Trump says North Korea no longer a nuclear threat: ‘sleep well!’

North Korea reaffirmed previous promises to work towards the "complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula".

When asked why the words "verifiable" and "irreversible" weren't included in the statement - words that form part of a State Department policy of "complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization", or CVID, before lifting sanctions on North Korea - Pompeo said, "I find that question insulting and ridiculous and frankly ludicrous".

Suga, Japan's top government spokesman, welcomed the easing of tensions on the Korean Peninsula because of the Trump-Kim summit. "Only then will there be relief from the sanctions".

"Make no mistake, we are going to maintain the readiness of our forces in South Korea", said one USA official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

During his summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, Trump announced the US would be ending large-scale annual military exercises conducted with South Korea but insisted that the status of the 28,500 American soldiers on the peninsula is not up for negotiation.

Earlier in the day, Trump declared that there is 'no longer a nuclear threat from North Korea'.

The president said there was no tit-for-tat deal with Pyongyang where there is denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula in exchange for an end to US military exercises with South Korea.

KCNA also asserted Trump had "expressed his intention" to lift sanctions against the North - something the United States president had said would happen "when we are sure that the nukes are no longer a factor". After a three-way meeting with Pompeo and Japan's top diplomat, South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha suggested the US still had some explaining to do, telling reporters that the issue of the drills "was not discussed in depth".

U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un shake hands during an expanded bilateral meeting at the Capella Hotel on the resort island of Sentosa, Singapore, June 12, 2018. The exercises are meant to ensure that South Korean and USA troops are ready to respond to sudden North Korean aggression.

After North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il died in 2011, his son, Jong Un, was named the head of the nation and went on to purge other family members from the party.

Pompeo also said Trump had been "unambiguous" in his conversations with Kim regarding the suspension of joint U.S.

Of the world's eight known nuclear powers beyond North Korea, three - India, Pakistan and Israel - emerged outside a formal global arms control framework.

"And naturally, they're not exclusively based in North Korea, but reportedly placed in China, India, Thailand and Malaysia".

Using the military exercises as a massive negotiating chip in exchange for the North denuclearizing is a pretty orthodox policy proposal, but it stunned nearly everybody that Trump seemed to be giving this away for free after his meeting. -South Korean exercises appeared off-limits under the new guidance. Trump cast that decision as a cost-saving measure, but also called the exercises "inappropriate" while talks continue. "So he's a very smart guy, he's a great negotiator, but I think we understand each other".

In North Korea, state media praised Kim for "opening a new chapter" in relations with the United States, and said Trump had accepted an invitation to visit the North. It's unclear whether the president informed US allies in the region of his plan to end the "war games", as he called them, prior to his declaration.

In Japan, the prospect of canceled U.S.

Tokyo has reacted with concern at Trump's plans to cancel military exercises with South Korea, saying such drills are vital for East Asian security. He said he planned to continue sharing the view with Washington and Seoul.
