Saul "Canelo" Alvarez will fight WBA and WBC world middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin in a rematch on 15 September, says the Mexican's promoter.

Golden Boy founder Oscar De La Hoya, who promotes Alvarez, tweeted out that both sides have come to an agreement after much back and forth at the last minute, which included a brief period following the deadline where De La Hoya told ESPN "there is no fight".

With Alvarez officially withdrawing from the match in April, Golovkin went on to face Vanes Martirosyan in the scheduled May 5 bout instead, finishing with a second-round knockout. Negotiations still were ongoing.

As it turned out, while De La Hoya was on the phone talking to ESPN, what was termed as a "Hail Mary" idea to save the fight was being discussed between Golden Boy president Eric Gomez and others involved in the fight and then communicated to Golovkin's team.

"Still working on it", Golovkin promoter Tom Loeffler relayed following the deadline, as Golovkin was in Moscow for the opening ceremonies of the 2018 World Cup.

The two boxing titans will meet almost one year after their first fight, which ended in a controversial draw - an underwhelming conclusion to the long-awaited blockbuster bout.
