  • Canada's FM slams U S attacks on trade, diplomacy

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expressing the federal government's support for Donald Trump's efforts to broker a denuclearization deal with North Korea.

"I see the television and he's giving a news conference about how he "will not be pushed around" by the United States".

"It would be with regret but it would be with absolute clarity and firmness that we move forward with retaliatory measures on July 1, applying equivalent tariffs to the ones that the Americans have unjustly applied to us", said Trudeau.

The president also withdrew USA support for a G-7 communique.

"We have a big trade deficit with Canada. He did a great disservice to the whole G7", economic advisor Larry Kudlow said on CNN on Sunday.

Soon after Trump left the G7 summit he tweeted that he had instructed the House of Representatives not to endorse the final communique of the G7 summit due to Trudeau's "false statements at his news conference", as the Canadian prime minister dismissed U.S. metal tariffs as "insulting" and announced retaliatory measures.

"There's a special place in hell for any foreign leader that engages in bad-faith diplomacy with President Donald J. Trump and then tries to stab him in the back on the way out the door", he said.

When Mr Trump's tweets withdrawing support from the G7 statement hit on Sunday, the Prime Minister's office said Mr Trudeau had not said anything in his closing news conference he has not said to the US President before.

"As an American, I hate this", Bruce Heyman, who was USA ambassador to Canada from 2014 to 2017, told CBC's On the Money. It's either 17 but could actually be 100 billion.

Canada's Consul General said the tariffs are the last thing his country wants to impose on Minnesota businesses.

"You don't just behave that way". Perhaps they were trying to show the power they have. "They don't take our farm products - many of them".

Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland responded to the White House assault by saying ad hominem attacks are not helpful, that Canada will retaliate to USA tariffs in a measured and reciprocal way and that Canada will always be willing to talk.

But Gregg Doud, the chief agricultural negotiator in the Office of the United States Trade Representative, told Reuters on Thursday that the US has "very serious concerns about the subsidies and the structure of Canada's dairy industry".

Canada will have to make dairy concessions to get a USA trade deal, but it does not have to mean dismantling supply management, Gifford said.
