  • Fewer Republicans say moral leadership ‘very important’ for president Gallup

He vetoed the two-year plan last year, but Republicans quickly overrode him. Garrett, the most conservative member of the New Jersey delegation, had represented the district for 14 years after serving in the state Assembly for 13.

Their job is to oust the most corrupt Republican lawmakers who lead key committees, to properly oversee the most reckless Cabinet secretaries, like Scott Pruitt, and to protect the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Justice Department and Robert Mueller from intimidation. One of them is Rep. Charles Graham's District 47, which covers much of Robeson County. Democrats are looking to tear down Baugh before the primary in an effort to get one of their own on the ballot. He said Democrats "genuinely want to work with you" and were frustrated to have been shut out of the budget-writing process. And he says Knight's rogue move signing the immigration petition won't be enough to set him apart. But, there's an open questions about whom he'll face in the runoff, because of California's new top-two primary system, the top two vote-getters, regardless of party, will advance. But they're prohibited from offering amendments.

Because what we've learned since 2016 is that the worst Democrat on the ballot for the House or Senate is preferable to the best Republican, because the best Republicans have consistently refused to take a moral stand against Trump's undermining of our law enforcement and intelligence agencies, the State Department, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Civil Service, the basic norms of our public life and the integrity of our elections.

If I were writing the choice on a ballot, it would read: "Are you in favor of electing a majority of Democrats in the House and/or Senate to put a check on Trump's power - when his own party demonstrably will not?" While some Republicans are ignoring Trump and some have left the party altogether, others are settling on the argument of the "bull in the china shop" analogy. "But unlike the Titanic, we might be able to save Leonardo DiCaprio before he goes under". He's not concerned about being perceived as an anti-Trump candidate, either. At the synagogue forum, there was an awkward moment when the moderator asked one of the candidates why he didn't just drop out and throw his support to one of his fellow Democrats. In 2016, for example, two Democrats faced off in the general election for a U.S. Senate seat that was ultimately won by Kamala Harris, a rising star in the party. On the Democratic side, the race evolved into a battle between Harley Rouda, a businessman backed by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and Hans Keirstead, a neuroscientist who developed innovative treatments for late-stage cancers and spinal cord injuries. He's pushed her to the left on some issues and he almost nabbed the endorsement from the California Democratic Party at the convention in February. But that hasn't helped clarify anything.

But Democrats here haven't figured out the right way to campaign against a Republican like Knight. For example, there are 16 candidates in the 48th District alone - eight Democrats and six Republicans - and 16 in the 49th District - eight Republicans and four Democrats, per Ballotpedia. That's because Democrats split their votes between too many candidates in the jungle primary, so the seat stayed in Republican hands even as President Obama easily carried the district that November.

One provision in the budget that lawmakers touted adds tests for three rare diseases to the state's newborn screening panel. "What do I tell my people?" Democratic party registration was 8.44 million and voters registering with other parties totaled just under 1 million.

The "jungle primary" is also known as a top-two primary, qualifying primary, nonpartisan blanket primary. "I think it's a great issue".

What's a "jungle" primary, and why are Democrats anxious about them in California? The state continues to be more Latino, more Asian, more liberal and that has changed the dynamics in every race from governor on down to Congress.
