  • Herba is standing trial for the alleged kidnap

While on trial in February in Italy, the court was shown CCTV footage of Ayling walking hand-in-hand with Herba the day before she was released.

Played out in a rural Italian village, the crime would eventually be traced back to the Black Country.

Picture: APAyling was lured to Milan with the promise of a modelling gig and then drugged when she showed up at a mocked-up photographic studio.

An Italian court has convicted a Polish man of kidnapping a 20-year-old British model.

"She has been accused of making the whole thing up, she's been judged on the way she looks".

Herba at first claimed to be working with a group that auctioned young women off on encrypted internet sites. He had pleaded his innocence by claiming the model was in on it all along.

Besides the prison sentence, the court also ordered Herba to pay an initial 60,000 euros in damages to Ayling. She was then put into a canvas bag and brought to a farmhouse in the Piedmont region.

She told cops she feared for her life during the ordeal.

Ayling was held captive for six days in 2017, before Herba released her to the British consulate in Milan.

Herba claimed it was a scheme which Ms Ayling had agreed to as part of a plan to boost her career, and he invented an online group behind dark web auctions of women.

She added: "I refuse to be labelled as simply a kidnapped model or a victim for ever".

In London, Ayling's current agent Adrian Sington said the verdict was "vindication - her story is true".

"Let´s not forget she was bundled into a suitcase, injected with ketamine in the boot of a auto and thought she was going to die", Sington added.

Italian law foresees a sentence of 25 to 30 years for kidnapping and extortion, but prosecutors asked the court in Milan to make allowance for the short duration of the abduction and a narcissistic personality disorder from which Herba was said to suffer.

"One of the difficulties with a psychopath and a narcissist, as Mr Herba is, is that he behaves in such a way that it's nearly impossible to believe that someone could be so stupid and so, in some ways, it's not surprising that the media found Chloe's story hard to believe".

"But let's not forget she was bundled into a suitcase, injected with ketamine in the boot of a auto and thought she was going to die".

The lawyer for Ms Ayling, Francesco Pesce, called it "quite an important verdict".

In his closing arguments, prosecutor Paolo Storari cited the possibility that Ayling could have died during the July 11-17, 2017 kidnapping in seeking a lengthy prison sentence for Herba.

At the start of the trial in February, a police officer told the court that Ms Ayling had been drugged, handcuffed and transported in a suitcase.

Former neighbours of Herba at the flats in Tividale were left stunned when it emerged he was caught up in an global police investigation.
