A British woman and an Australian man have been found dead in Portugal after reportedly taking selfies from a 30-metre high wall overlooking the beach.

Rui Pereira da Terra, the head of the rescue service in Cascais port near Lisbon, told the news agency Lusa that officials suspected the man and woman had been posing on a wall above the beach when they fell.

A council worker reportedly contacted police after finding the bodies early on Tuesday morning, and it's believed they fell from the cliff top sometime between 1am and 6am local time.

A beach cleaner then came upon the remains and alerted the authorities.

The couple left Australia in January this year to go travelling and were in Portugal to attend a friend's wedding.

Benson worked at a nonprofit that raises awareness about the destruction of wildlife in oceans, according to her Facebook.

This isn't the first time tourists have fallen off from the wall.

'The Department has been in contact with the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office regarding the other person who died in the incident.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) told Australian Associated Press (AAP) that it was "providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian who died in Portugal".

Pescadores Beach, which translates to Fisherman's Beach, is ringed by cliffs and a wall of up to 40m high.

Meanwhile, the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office has stated that it was in touch with local authorities "following the death of a British woman in Portugal and stand ready to provide support to her family". Picture: SuppliedThe large stone wall sits 30m above the popular surf beach.
