  • Mile Jedinak celebrates after scoring his penalty

Australia captain Mile Jedinak hit a second-half VAR-assisted penalty to earn the Socceroos' first point in Russian Federation after Christian Eriksen's opener, giving Australia a glimmer of hope of reaching the last 16.

Mile Jedinak's penalty kick gave Australia a 1-1 draw against Denmark on Thursday and new life at the World Cup.

With seven minutes gone, Tottenham midfielder Eriksen showed sublime technique to finish after Nicolai Jørgensen's neat lay-off in the area.

The 38th-minute penalty was set up after Denmark forward Yussuf Poulsen was called for a handball following a video review.

"Christian is a player who can change matches, and we try to get him involved as much as we can", Denmark boss Age Hareide said.

On the 50th minute, Denmark nearly went ahead after a sweeping move almost resulted in a goal but Pione Sisto fired just wide.

Don't miss a moment of the World Cup!

Australia created a rare chance following good work from Mathew Leckie, whose low cross resulted in a blocked shot from Robbie Kruse. And he says the Danes are better team than world No.7 France, who pipped Australia 2-1 in the tournament opener.

Denmark & Australia kept their World Cup dreams alive with a 1-1 draw.

At the same time, some 1600 kilometres south in Sochi, Australia will come out all guns blazing seeking a win against Peru - while keeping their fingers crossed that France will continue to improve and score a victory over Denmark. Spanish referee Antonio Lahoz waved play on but soon got a message that he should check his decision.

That was the last meaningful action of the contest, with both nations having to settle for a share of the spoils which maintains their respective hopes of making it out of Group C and into the knockout stages.

Van Marwijk, who replaced Ange Postecoglou at the helm of the Australian team in January, handed 19-year-old Arzani another chance to impress after a late cameo appearance against France.

But that's not the end of the permutations as Group D winners Croatia wait following their stunning demolition of Argentina.

Jedinak now stands two behind Australia's top-scorer Tim Cahill (5).

Nabbout's arm was in a sling after the game, but he said he wasn't in pain.
