Apple Goes Silent, As Telegram CEO Accuses It Of Blocking Updates

  • Russian Telecom Watchdog Gives Apple One Month to Respond to Request to Remove Telegram from App Store

According to the report, over the past four years the revenue of Apple's App store has increased by 119%.

Russian Federation wanted Telegram to turn over encryption keys, which the company refused to do.

Because Apple is now blocking Telegram updates globally, Durov said that his team can't fix certain issues in the app and its users can't get new features, nor Telegram's new GDPR-compliant privacy policy.

He says that it coincides with Russian Federation implementing a block on Telegram, and it means there have been no updates rolling out to users anywhere in the world for a month and a half. Earlier this week, speaking to local newspapers, director of Roskomnadzor (Russia's Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media) said that the country has asked Apple to help Russia block Telegram.

Apple has run into similar criticism in China, after the company removed virtual private networks, apps that allowed users to avoid the country's online censorship, from its App Store in China.

In April, Telegram was banned in Russia after the company refused to hand over encryption keys to the Russian government. The company has remained silent on the issue since then, even as Telegram's CEO now accuses it of blocking his app's updates globally since mid-April.

A month later, Telegram continues to be available on the App Store. -- Apple has yet to comment on the matter.

Contrarily to the likes of Facebook and Google, whose business models are based on knowing enough about their users to serve effective advertisements, Apple says it doesn't need to know our most intimate details.

Durov also claims the lack of app updates mean Telegram has also "been unable to fully comply with GDPR" before the May 25th deadline.

Apple already shows App Store users advertisements at the top of search results within the download portal, but this would take things a step further.

"Sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience".
