White House's Kudlow: Not certain what U.S. will do on China's ZTE

Vice Premier Liu He, President Xi Jinping's top economic adviser, and central bank chief Yi Gang arrived in the USA capital on Tuesday for a new round of talks aimed at heading off a trade war.

Trump's backpedaling on Wednesday followed days of criticism from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.

"Offering to trade American sanctions enforcement to promote jobs in China is plainly a bad deal for American workers and for the security of all Americans", wrote the senators, led by the Senate Democratic leader, Chuck Schumer.

Navarro, author of the book "Death by China", has been the loudest "nationalist" voice on trade policy in the administration and a major advocate for punitive tariffs on Chinese goods to try to force Beijing to change its trade practices. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, tweeted Tuesday. "Apparently "deal" is we lift sanctions imposed on ZTE for helping Iran & N.Korea & they can resume spying & stealing our intellectual property".

Liu, who is China's top economic official, told US lawmakers on Wednesday that he would work hard to address the U.S.

Last month, the US Commerce Department blocked American firms from selling parts or providing services to the Chinese company, which makes smartphones and other telecommunications equipment.

Trump's "comments about ZTE sound an alarm bell for counterintelligence, cyber security, & red, white and blue jobs", Wyden tweeted Tuesday.

But Kinzinger stressed that China poses a significant threat to USA intellectual property. "In my view, giving sanctions relief to ZTE is a big mistake".

Uncertainty over relations between the US and China has roiled financial markets and raised concerns among businesses anxious about a trade war. "What's important is whether a giant Chinese state-owned enterprise gets away with breaking American law".

Trump has directed Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross to review "remedies" for ZTE, Kudlow said.

On Monday, Trump tweeted that his decision to support ZTE is part of trade negotiations with China and stems from his "personal relationship with President Xi". Navarro's shift away from a lead role in the talks comes amid a growing rift over trade policy with Mnuchin, who has favored more achievable deals to open China's economy to USA firms and ease tariff threats.

Trump tweeted his support for ZTE earlier this week, putting the president at odds with the Commerce Department and its decision to impose trade restrictions on the company amid allegations it violated USA sanctions. They have been making hundreds of billions of dollars a year from the U.S., for many years.

"In the first four months of the year, major auto ports in China detected a total of 652 batches of cars from the U.S. - totaling 4,360 vehicles worth $312.5 million - that were not up to standard", the customs administration told AFP, adding that this was "a relatively quick pace of growth". China has seen our demands.
