  • Dark clouds approach Friday near Fort Lauderdale where a state of emergency is in effect due to Subtropical Storm Alberto which could bring rain to Upstate New York

People in the Gulf coast braced for flash flooding, rip currents, lightening strikes, power outages and strong winds starting Monday evening.

Anyone that lives in a flood prone area should be ready to move to higher ground if necessary.

Florida, Alabama and MS declared states of emergency on Saturday as the storm threatened up to 12 inches of rain over the Memorial Day weekend and tidal surges and damaging winds, according to Patrick Burke of the weather service's Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland.

Subtropical Storm Alberto's gusty rain and brisk winds roiled the seas off the U.S. Gulf Coast on Monday, keeping white sandy beaches emptied of their usual Memorial Day crowds.

Its winds, which had strengthened overnight to 65 miles per hour, were down to 60 miles per hour as of 11 a.m.

A storm surge watch and a tropical storm watch are in effect for Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties, the National Weather Service in New Orleans advises.

The Storm Prediction Center outlines a low-end, "marginal" risk of severe storms in the region Tuesday because of Alberto's remnants; the primary threat would be a brief tornado developing within the tropical rain bands. A tropical storm warning was discontinued from Florida's Anclote River to the Suwannee River.

"Most of the rain will be today and tonight", said Gardner, although scattered storms and showers will be present throughout the week.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott issued a state of emergency on Saturday for all 67 counties in his state.

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey issued a state of emergency for 40 counties.

Flash flooding is also expected in that tri-state area.

"This is definitely a unsafe storm".

In addition to parts of the southeastern USA, the heavy rains and storm conditions could produce "life-threatening flash floods and mudslides" in Cuba, the NHC said.

Forecasters also warned that the storm could drop 2 inches of rain in SC, up to 4 inches in isolated areas, and cause flooding.

Many business owners spent the weekend filling sandbags and preparing for the brunt of the storm.

Storm Alberto is not expected to strengthen into a hurricane but will still pose dangers to residents and holidaymakers across the south-east.

The storm is expected to make landfall early Monday morning on Florida's Panhandle.

If you are heading to the Florida beaches or along the Gulf Coast starting in MS, you will still be under the Tropical Storm Watch and a Storm Surge Watch into Tuesday because Alberto is tracking closer to the Florida Panhandle. Alberto will become the ninth named storm to make landfall on the continental United States before June 1 on record. With maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour, Alberto was moving north at 9 miles per hour.
