While it's "standard operating procedure for the Secret Service to coordinate security wherever the vice president travels", a Secret Service official told NPR, many victims and parents of the recent school shooting in Parkland, Florida that left 17 dead, are criticizing the NRA noting the irony in the policies.

"It's ironic that they feel they need to ban guns to protect themselves especially after their main philosophy has been more guns equals more protection yet they don't think they need to protect our kids in the same way", said David Hogg, a student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas who has pushed for stricter gun control since the shooting.

In reality, the NRA was not responsible for the decision to bar attendees from carrying guns at the 2018 Leadership Forum. The event will draw people who want stricter gun laws.

Licensed handguns (both concealed carry and open carry) are permitted on premise, as allowed by state law, unless the type of event being held at the [Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center] falls under an exception that would prohibit a person with a license to carry a handgun at the event. According to the NRA, we should want everyone to have weapons when we are in public.

Authorities in Dallas say they are prepared for large protests as the National Rifle Association kicks off its convention in the downtown area. Several emails were attached to the NRA's filing, including one dated February 28 saying, "Next time I hope it's someone in your family looking down the barrel of a gun or shot in the back trying to flee some great Floridian". You may disagree...but in my opinion the very people that claim to protect the 2A should never host an event that requires disarming the good guys. Sad.

Guns were also banned during Trump's appearance at the NRA's annual meeting in Atlanta a year ago. Pence had already been slated to speak at Friday's leadership forum.

This will mark the fourth year in a row Trump speaks at the event.
