  • Trump: Pompeo Traveling to N. Korea to Prepare for Summit

Although there is considerable skepticism in the United States and Japan about whether North Korea is genuine, analysts point out that Kim appears to want to move on from nuclear to economic development.

"President Trump and President Xi agreed on the importance of continued implementation of sanctions on North Korea until it permanently dismantles its nuclear and missile programs", the readout said.

"China is willing to continue to work with all relevant parties and play an active role in comprehensively advancing the process of peaceful resolution of the peninsula issue through dialogue, and realising long-term peace and stability in the region", Xi said.

The United States expects China to use its "unique leverage" to push North Korea onto the path to denuclearization, the State Department said Tuesday in response to the latest meeting between the Chinese and North Korean leaders.

Increased security measures taken in the Chinese city of Dalian, where he arrived on a special plane, an unnamed senior official of the DPRK, presumably the leader of the country Kim Jong-UN.

Xinhua reiterated that Kim and Xi had "fully exchanged views and reached important consensus" on the Korean Peninsula issue at their first meeting.

The young leader stirred up tensions on the Korean Peninsula with his nuclear weapons testing and purging of several key officials close to Beijing, including his uncle, Jang Song Thaek. Earlier, the Minister of foreign Affairs of China Wang Yi visited North Korea. Kim's two-day visit included a welcome banquet, luncheon, and even a stroll on the beach with Xi. "And that's what worries me - is that all of a sudden, if it is a meeting between the two leaders, both of whom have a tendency to kind of say exactly just what the latest thing is on their minds, I do think there needs to be a lot of preparation".

Speculation had been rife that Kim had travelled to Dalian, not far from the border between China and North Korea, after citizens reported tightened security and traffic controls.

Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-In met in April and pledged to push for complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Trump subsequently confirmed his planned summit with Kim without giving details of date and venue.

USA diplomats and military planners such as Defense Secretary James Mattis have repeatedly said that "there is no wedge" between the United States and South Korea and that the security alliance between the two countries, which are tied by a mutual defense treaty signed in 1953, remains strong.

He also told the reporters he doesn't know exactly who he will meet in North Korea.

This meeting is the second face to face summit between the two leaders this year, after they held a secret meeting in Beijing in March.

American negotiators, led by U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, issued a lengthy list of demands, according to people familiar with the talks that the White House later called "frank" discussions.

Xi said that with concerted efforts of both sides, the consensuses were being well implemented.

During that meeting, Kim crossed into the south for the first time.
