Right-To-Die Advocate David Goodall Ends Life Listening To 'Ode To Joy'

Philip Nitschke, founder of Exit International, the euthanasia organization which helped Goodall kill himself, said his death occurred at 1030 GMT from an infusion of Nembutal, a barbiturate.

The grandfather of 12 had attracted over $20,000 in donations from the public to help fund his journey to Europe from Perth, Australia, earlier this month. He said, "If I had to choose something, I think it would be the final movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony", then Goodall burst out with a few bars of the tune in German.

"My abilities and eyesight are declining, and I no longer want to live this way", he said. "But my lack of vision would seriously impair it".

He said he would have preferred to die in Australia.

Nitschke said the professor did this "after answering questions which said he knew who he was, where he was and what he was about to do, and he answered these questions with great clarity. I was a bit sorry to say goodbye to my family in Bordeaux but that's the way it was".

The centenarian retained his sense of humor up to the very end and even wore a top inscribed with the words "Ageing Disgracefully" during his meeting with the press on Tuesday. However, there are some changes in the works ― last fall, the state of Victoria became the first in the country to legalize assisted dying in specific cases. Goodall's home state of Western Australia is now debating whether to introduce the policy. "I'd like to be remembered as an instrument for freeing the elderly to choose their own death". "I'm happy that this period beforehand has been used to interview me, and I've brought the ideas of euthanasia to light".

"I have serious concerns about a community where we make arbitrary decisions about whose life is valuable enough to continue and whose should be ended under the law", he added.

According to Swiss law meanwhile, anyone who is of sound mind and who has over a period of time voiced a consistent wish to end their life can request so-called assisted voluntary death, or AVD.

He was born in the U.K.in April 1914, just before the outbreak of World War I, and moved from London to Australia as a child.

An expert in arid shrublands, he also worked in Britain and held academic posts at USA universities. In 2016 the professor was given the Order of Australia Medal.

While not terminally ill, Goodall told reporters from across the globe that he had simply stopped enjoying life at his advanced age.
