  • 'Smallville' actress, alleged sex cult leader back in court

Actress Allison Mack, center, leaves after a hearing at Brooklyn Federal Court in NY. Raniere is now being detained without bail at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.

Each have pleaded not responsible to fees they coerced ladies into becoming a member of a secret society inside the group and changing into Raniere's "intercourse slaves".

According to The Daily Mail, Mack spoke very little during Friday's court proceedings and avoided eye contact with Raniere, while he reportedly tried several times to catch her eye.

Prior to Raniere's arraignment in court, a release from the Justice Department by United States attorney Richard P. Donoghue read: 'As alleged in the indictment, Allison Mack recruited women to join what was purported to be a female mentorship group that was, in fact, created and led by Keith Raniere... The actress was released from jail to her parents on $5 million bail last month and has since then been placed under house arrest and must wear an electronic monitoring bracelet.

"We anticipate there will be additional charges against additional defendants", Assistant U.S. Attorney Moira Kim Penza told Brooklyn federal Judge Nicholas Garaufis Friday, who has been assigned to oversee the case. Mack, who was arrested in April for her alleged involvement with the sex cult and Raniere, who was arrested in March, have been formally charged with sex trafficking, sex-trafficking conspiracy, and forced-labor conspiracy.

Each have mentioned they had been unaware of the alleged abuses. The trial is set to begin on October 1.

She appeared alongside Keith Raniere, the leader of the group. Some of the women were branded with a symbol that prosecutors said contained Raniere's initials. Agnifilo said he expected to prove that everything described by prosecutors was "utterly consensual".

"I'm not concerned about anything that is not the truth", he said.

"It's terrorism by litigation", Natalie, 59, said.

Attorneys for Raniere advised reporters they're desperate to go to trial and provides his facet of the story. "For me to see him held accountable, it's pretty important". A lot of adult, strong-minded, free-willed women made decisions for their own lives and made their own choices. "But a group of women decide to brand themselves and all of the sudden, we assume they're victims". She and Raniere did not communicate or look at each another. She and her lawyers did not comment to the media scrum outside.
