Porterfield confident of Ireland's place at Test table

  • Watch the moment Kevin O'Brien became the first Irishman to score a Test century against Pakistan in Dublin

Ireland's bid for an unlikely victory in its inaugural test came up short as debutant Imam-ul-Haq steered Pakistan out of trouble and to a five-wicket win on the final day on Tuesday.

Amir's three wickets earlier in the day had put Pakistan into a position from which an innings win seemed entirely possible - even likely - but O'Brien and Stuart Thompson combined for a 114-run rearguard that not only pushed Ireland in front and burnished local pride, but allowed them to sleep on the possibility of another famous upset.

Pakistan's subsequent wobble left the match fascinatingly poised, but Imam and Babar restored order and the chase was completed before tea, allowing Pakistan to look ahead to facing England, while Ireland reflect on a promising first venture into the Test arena.

Imam shared a vital 126-run stand with Babar Azam (59) for the fourth wicket.

O'Brien himself, Ireland's first Test centurion, had not added to his overnight 118 when he was caught behind and despondently departed having faced 217 balls and hit 12 boundaries.

Abbas took his second five-wicket haul in Test cricket, in his sixth game, to finish with figures of 5-66 in 28.3 overs.

Should they go on to claim a win in their first step into the unknown, it would surely prove to be one of the most striking results in worldwide cricket in recent times, with their opponents Pakistan being well-established test side.

In a match which saw the first day washed out, Pakistan dominated day two and three of the Test match by declaring their first innings on 310-9. At that stage, they were still 116 runs behind. And 94 for three became 95 for four when Amir had Ireland captain William Porterfield (32) edging to wicket-keeper Sarfraz Ahmed, the Pakistan captain.

Although it was nearly inevitable that the upset was too far gone, Ireland further added to a respectable scoreline and outstanding match in general producing a further outing through Stuart Thompson's dismissal of Safraz Ahmed for 8, Pakistan now at 152-5.

It was not to be, of course, however, Porterfield was taking many positives from the five-day experience, and while Kevin O'Brien was awarded the man of the match for his maiden century and a fine 40 in the first innings, the captain felt that every man on the team contributed to the overall performance.

Boyd Rankin followed up closely with another outing leaving Pakistan 13-2 - before Murtagh claimed his second of the innings bowling out Asad Shafiq as Pakistan moved to 14-3.

"I think it's very good for Pakistan as a team to chase this on the fifth day".

The day didn't start as brightly for the Irish boys as they would've hoped. It was our first Test match and it was tough on the first day, we struggled a bit with the emotions. Pakistan have a lot of good young players coming up, and the chance been provided to these young lads in their young careers is giving Pakistan cricket a bright future.
