Air crash investigators remained on the scene of a fatal light plane crash in Offaly on Monday, May 14.

. It is understood the task was made more hard as the plane was buried to a depth of around six feet in the bog.

Meanwhile, another local resident Declan Burns (49) said he understood the plane had just dropped off the parachutists and was heading back to the airfield when something went terribly wrong and the plane - understood to be a Cessna Caravan - "just nose-dived".

It is noted that the flight took place on the territory of the parachute club, the causes of the crash are being investigated.

Gardaí said that all 16 parachutists made the jump from the plane and that witnesses saw the craft crash soon afterwards.

He said: "People would be over there all the time, especially at weekends in the summer, a lot of people parachuting and a lot of fundraising jumpers".

Fellow Offaly councillor Noel Cribbin said: "This is a big shock to the area".
